Tablets

It’s the time for gift-giving once again. At the top of most people’s lists, aside from a Snuggie or Chia Pet (ch-ch-ch-chia!), is a whole slew of gadgets – most notably, tablets. No, not the kind Moses toted around, but those made by Apple and Samsung. Several different models have come out over the past year, so unfortunately that makes it a bit difficult to decide on just one. However, I’ve narrowed it down to 3 leading models:

Apple iPad – The tablet all other tablets strive to be…or at least that’s what Apple would have you believe. The truth is, the iPad is quite a powerhouse when it comes to features, speed, graphics, beauty, and perhaps most importantly, security. However, it comes at a price – $500 minimum (plus tax) to be exact.

Samsung Galaxy Tab – As close as you can get to an iPad in size, speed, and beauty. The big difference is the Galaxy Tab runs on Google’s Android mobile operating system, the same OS running on millions and millions of smartphones these days. It has its own app store (Android Market) and can really hold its own against Apple’s offering. The price, unfortunately, is also comparable to the iPad.

Amazon Kindle Fire – The best combination of features and value. The Kindle Fire also runs on the Android operating system and features a full-color screen (though not as large as the iPad or Galaxy Tab screens), a dual-core processor, and most other features you’ll find on much higher-priced tablets. This one comes in at $199. Quite a deal for all those features.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a beautiful, well-made, reliable, easy-to-use tablet (and don’t mind spending a fair bit of cash), the iPad is for you. If you don’t need as many features and can settle for a bit of a smaller screen, give the Kindle Fire a try for 60% less cost than the other two tablets.

As always, though, a word of advice: There’s usually a new version of any given device coming out within a year of the previous version, so keep an eye out for reports of those newer models and maybe get more bang for your buck by waiting a few months. If, however, you want to surprise a loved one with a brand new tablet this holiday season, the current models will still bring joy to even the worst techno-grinch ;-)
